Ankle Sprains and Strains

Published by Dr. Alden Clendenin

Two common sports injuries are ankle sprains and ankle strains, though some may believe they are the same injury. Most importantly, if they are ignored rather than treated right away, they can lead to a significant amount of pain. Ankle injuries often occur due to either an acute injury or overuse injury, though sprains and strains are different.

Ankle Sprains

This injury involves the ankle ligaments and the direct or indirect trauma that affects them. The ligaments can either be stretched too far or actually torn due to the ankle is forced further than its normal range of motion. Ankle sprains are rather common, and they can happen to anyone, even non-athletes. There are different grades of ankle sprains (and strains), and with grade 1 or 2, treatment is rather simple. With anything higher, you should see a doctor immediately.

Ankle Strains

Strains, unlike sprains, deal with the tendons and muscles rather than ligaments. They can also be acute or chronic, whereas ankle sprains are just acute. Though they are less common, especially because you see them most often in athletes, they are still painful. Anything from running to repeated actions on the same muscle, such as being on pointe in ballet, can lead to a strain.

Treatment of Both

While they are both different injuries, the treatment is rather similar, assuming the sprain or strain still falls under grade 1 or 2. Most doctors will recommend the “RICE” treatment. This stands for “Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation”, which are rather self-explanatory. You may also want to take medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help with pain and inflammation. In addition, do not place too much stress until it is fully healed.

With Grade 3 sprains and strains, it definitely will require a doctor and longer healing. You will likely have to brace your foot, if not cast it. In addition, rehabilitation will likely be necessary. If you have badly sprained or strained your ankle, go to a doctor right away rather than bother with the RICE protocol.

Here at Chicago Chiropractic and Sports Injury Centers, we strive to ensure that all sports injuries are treated properly. Contact us today to learn more about rehabilitation for your ankle sprain or strain.
