Different Types of Massage Therapy

Published by Dr. Alden Clendenin

When you think of massage therapy, a traditional massage likely comes to mind. But in reality, there are many popular types of massages that can help treat people in Chicago with neck pain. Here are some examples of massage styles from which you can choose.

Swedish Massage

You can expect to find this traditional type of massage almost anywhere that offers massage therapy. Massage therapists use lotion or oil to address both problem areas as well as the overall body. If you’re recovering from an injury or you’re experiencing neck pain in Chicago, a Swedish massage is especially helpful.

Hot Stone Massage

Therapists use smooth, heated stones strategically on specific body parts during hot stone massages. Specifically, the stones are a volcanic rock called basalt that retains heat well. This type of massage is ideal if you have tight muscles, as the warmth helps loosen them and relieve tension. It is important to note that if you have a medical condition such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease or varicose veins, check with your doctor beforehand to make sure it is safe for you to get a hot stone massage.

Deep Tissue Massage

If you have a muscle knot, a deep tissue massage can target these deep layers. Deliberate, slow strokes against the grain of the muscle are more intense than a typical massage, but it should never be painful. Make sure to voice any concerns during the massage.

Massage therapy is a great tool whether you’re in Chicago suffering from neck pain or you simply want to treat yourself to some relaxation time. Contact Chicago Chiropractic & Sports Injury Centers to set up your next massage!
