Olympic Athletes Who Use Acupuncture

Published by Dr. Alden Clendenin

We don’t know about you, but the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang have been so inspiring! Exposure to the top athletes in the world have us thinking: how do they properly care for their bodies? Tried-and-true methods like acupuncture have emerged as a common theme among Olympic athletes. The traditional Chinese medicine practice is used for both recovery and healing properties.

Read on to see some world-class athletes who rely on acupuncture to stay at the top of their game.

Mark McMorris

He received a bronze medal in both the 2014 and 2018 Olympics for slopestyle snowboarding. Mark is truly inspirational; he’s battled a wide range of injuries. From a broken rib to crashing into a tree and entering a medically induced coma, he’s battled it all. His recovery regimes include acupuncture, massages, pool training and gym work.

Dee Dee Trotter

This Olympic track athlete is dedicated to acupuncture. Her acupuncturist even accompanied her to the 2012 games, during which she took home bronze in the 400-meter run.

Yin Jian

This world-class Chinese sailor took home a gold medal in the 2008 games after spending years battling injury and odds. At the Olympics, she spent every night getting treated via acupuncture and massages to help ease her muscle strains.

Amy Acuff

Acuff is an Olympic high jumper and competed in the London Olympics for her fifth time representing the USA. She’s a licensed acupuncturist in Austin, Texas and credits some of her success to acupuncture’s injury prevention and recovery benefits.

Daniel Kowalski

Olympic gold, silver and bronze medalist used acupuncture to not only benefit him as a swimmer but to keep him healthy as a whole. He made a video explaining how acupuncture helped him recover from shoulder injuries, improved his sleep and fended off the cold and flu.
