Overuse Knee Injuries

Published by Dr. Alden Clendenin

Your knees are involved in nearly every sport, meaning that there is a much higher chance for injury. Knee injuries, both overuse and acute, make up nearly 15% of all sports injuries, and make up an even greater percentage of clinic visits. Understanding the function of the knee and the underlying issues with overuse knee injuries is something that you can expect from a chiropractor. Knee injuries are extremely painful and only get worse without treatment. If you experience a knee injury and play sports, see a chiropractor as soon as possible.

Anatomy of the Knee

Your knee is made up of many parts, all of which can become injured. There are four quadrants that make up the knee: the anterior, medial, posterior, and lateral. Each quadrant has additional parts, and each part is crucial to the function of the knee. Here at Sports Injury Centers, all of our doctors are experts in what makes the knee tick and how to treat it holistically.

Management of Overuse Knee Injuries

Chiropractic care is based in alignment. Management of any injury starts with understanding the root of the problem; is your spine misaligned, does your posture need work, etc. Once the root of the problem is discovered, it is important to determine the severity of the injury. Oftentimes, sports injuries that are treated early can result in a quick return to the field. However, as with any injury, if you continue to use your knees without treatment, the injury will be exacerbated and become worse.

Treatment ranges from the PRICE protocol to surgery. Fortunately, chiropractic care sees surgery as the last and final option; chiropractors prefer rehabilitation, strengthening programs, and a focus on endurance and flexibility. With an overuse knee injury, it is important to schedule an appointment with Chicago Chiropractic and Sports Injury Centers to begin treatment right away so that you can get back to the sport you love!
