Spinal Manipulation Study

Published by Dr. Alden Clendenin

A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association provides the latest batch of evidence that spinal manipulation is an effective treatment option to back pain. When it comes to lower back pain, millions of Americans go without treatment since they want to avoid powerful narcotics; or, they become reliant on these painkillers. This study showed that not only does spinal manipulation provide similar relief to over-the-counter medication, it also improved function and comfort.

What Is Spinal Manipulation?

Spinal manipulation is a holistic treatment performed by chiropractors that involves “applying pressure and moving joints in the spine”. It can provide relief in a variety of ways, from repositioning small joints to relaxing muscles. Many experiencing back pain are suffering from damaged or not enough material in the disks between the vertebrae; spinal manipulation may actually restore some of this material. There is also something to be said for the mind-body interaction that spinal manipulation provides.

Findings

More and more researchers are looking for natural treatments for pain relief, as prescription painkillers are not the ideal option. This particular study aimed to see how spinal manipulation assists with lower back pain, and found that the treatment improved overall function in patients, as well as lowered their number on a pain scale. While painkillers provide pain relief as well, they can cause serious long-term effects, whereas holistic treatments have no negative side effects.

Overall, when one is suffering from lower back pain, there are many different treatment options. However, there really isn’t one that is ahead of the pack as far as pain relief goes. Spinal manipulation therapy is a great holistic option, so contact Chicago Chiropractic & Sports Injury Centers to see how we can help!
