Eating Healthy Over the Holidays

Published on December 10th, 2017

Until January 1st, it can be extremely difficult to eat healthy, but there are some steps you can take to stay on the right track! With lots of sweet treats around and heavier meals, it can be easy to put on some extra weight during the holidays. However, there are relatively simple ways to stay on track, despite all the temptation surrounding you. When you are at the office, keep healthy snacks at your desk to try to avoid the treats people bring in; when you are out shopping, always eat before going to the mall to prevent food court indulgences. While at a holiday party, follow these tips!

Bring Your Own

You wouldn’t go to a party and avoid everything your hosts cooked; however, you can easily be a great guest and bring a couple of healthy dishes! This way, you know there will be something that you can enjoy, and your hosts will be grateful you thought to bring a dish or two. On the other hand, if your hosts do not want you to bring anything, eat a healthy snack prior to a holiday party so you will be less tempted to indulge. Additionally, when you are at the party, try not to hover near the food, otherwise you will likely find yourself digging in more often.

Control Portions and Environment

When you are at a holiday party, it can be easy to just take whatever plate someone hands you, and be around a lot of people that are eating or drinking excessively. By always serving yourself, trying to use the smaller plates offered, and always taking a smaller portion than you think you’ll want, you can control your own portions. There’s always going to be seconds if you want more; oftentimes, though, we just eat what is in front of us rather than thinking how hungry we actually are. As far as environment, the more people you are around for an actual meal, the more you will likely eat. If you have to sit down, sit down next to a healthy eater or someone who eats slower!

Everyone loves a good holiday party; however, there are some downsides to your health. By being mindful about your food and drink intake, you’ll be much happier in the long run!
