Preventing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Over 3 million people suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome every year. Carpal tunnel itself is a narrow passageway that is located in your wrist that protects the median nerve and flexor tendons that help bend the fingers and thumb. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when there is a pinched nerve that causes numbness and tingling in the hand and arm.

Thankfully, there are measures that you can take to reduce your chance of developing carpal tunnel. Here are some recommendations from our Chicago chiropractor.

Wrist Flexion

Be aware of your wrist position; neutral wrist position is your best option to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. Your hand should be in line with your wrist. You should also be mindful of your wrists’ position while you are sleeping. If you sleep on your hands while you are sleeping, especially if they are flexed, it increases your risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome.

Avoid Preventative Strain

At work, be mindful of how you are using your hands, especially if you have to repeatedly perform the same task. If you can’t avoid movements that involve bending or twisting your hands, make sure to gradually increase the amount of time you spend doing each one. Take breaks often and switch hands when you can.

Stretch

Incorporate stretching into your daily routine. Aim to stretch the muscles in your wrists once in the morning, once at lunch and once at the end of each day. Rotate your wrists and fingers in different motions. You can also loosen your shoulders and straighten your back; afterward, you’ll feel energized and have less tension.
