Rotator Cuff Injuries

Published on April 15th, 2016

Your rotator cuff is created through the muscles and tendons at the top of the humerus merging together around the shoulder joint. The rotator cuff is easily injured, particularly for those that over-exert their shoulders, such as swimmers, tennis players, and baseball players. These injuries can either be acute or chronic, though both are painful.

Causes

Depending on what type of rotator cuff injury you have sustained, the injury could be caused by a single event or degeneration. If the injury is acute, it has been caused by a singular event, such as falling on it or lifting something very heavy. Degeneration happens to many, just due to the fact that we age. Those that have careers in roofing, carpentry, etc., will experience faster rotator cuff degeneration. A chronic injury can also be caused by shoulder impingement syndrome.

Symptoms

The most obvious symptom of a rotator cuff injury is shoulder pain, though this can present itself in different ways. Shoulder pain can showcase itself in stiffness, muscle weakness, loss of range of motion, swelling and tenderness, and more. As with most injuries, it is important to seek treatment early on before the injury becomes worse.

Treatment

Typically, treatment does not require surgery. There are different phases to treatment, and by the third phase, the injury should be okay. The first phase is protection and pain control, which includes rest and a possible brace. The second phase is a restorative phase and the last phase is an integrative one.
