Best Sleeping Positions for a Sore Lower Back

Published by Dr. Alden Clendenin

Back pain can go from painful to intolerable overnight, which is why it’s important to find a sleeping position that is comforting and doesn’t make your pain worse. Through our experience, our Chicago chiropractors at Sports Injury Centers have found many different sleeping positions that are ideal for our patients who have backaches, especially in the lower part of their back.

On Your Back with Knee Support

Did you know that sleeping on your back is typically considered the best sleeping position to support a healthy back? It is because this position evenly distributes your body’s weight along your body’s largest surface. To maintain the natural curve of your spine, our Chicago chiropractors recommend placing a small pillow under your knees.

On Your Side with a Pillow Between Your Knees

Sleeping on your side is a popular sleeping position, but it can pull the spine out of position, putting a strain on the lower back. In order to correct this, place a firm pillow between your knees; this raises the upper leg and restores the alignment of your hips, pelvis and spine.

The Fetal Position

If you have a herniated disc, sleeping in the fetal position will likely bring you the most comfort, as it helps open up your joints and reduce the bending on your spine. Lay down on one side and tuck your knees into your chest.
