Training For A Marathon

Published by Dr. Alden Clendenin

One of the ultimate goals of many athletes is to train for a marathon. Unfortunately, training injuries often occur, but many of these can be avoided through preventive chiropractic care. At Chicago Chiropractic & Sports Injury Centers we want to help you achieve your running goals, and based on our years of experience, here are some key training tips to consider.

Training Tips

Include some core stability and mobility work in your training regimen. To ensure a long, healthy running career, balance your running with other activities such as yoga, Pilates or simple stretching and core body exercises.

Remember your form and include good posture when running. This will reduce stress on your body and minimize wear and tear.

Follow a training schedule that gradually builds time and distance. It takes time to prepare to run long distances, and you want to avoid pre-race injuries caused by over training.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care

We also recommend periodic chiropractic care. Chiropractic helps prevent training injuries by keeping you moving efficiently, easing some of the mechanical loads and stresses on the body.

An excellent preventive measure is a chiropractic adjustment to correct structural alignment and improve your body’s physical function. Think of an adjustment as a re-boot of your body’s musculosketal system, one purpose of which is to bring the pelvis and spinal column into alignment.

One of the great things about an adjustment re-boot is that you can resume your training immediately with an initial light workout. You don’t want to exercise to the point of fatigue, just enough to get the body used to working with the new mechanics, avoiding the faulty mechanics of the past. And you’ll feel great as the new mechanics take over!

Our highly trained and experienced doctors can also help determine the likelihood of future injuries by identifying muscle imbalances or joint restrictions. Over time, these can lead to more physical wear and tear on the body and eventually a painful injury that may stop your training in its tracks.

At Chicago Chiropractic & Sports Training Centers, our doctors offer the very best in preventive care and treatment. We invite you to read the comments of some of our satisfied patients. And whatever your training objective, a marathon or a local 5K, contact us today for an appointment and let one of our doctors help you pursue your running goals.
