Working Out After Unexpected Time Off

Published by Dr. Alden Clendenin

How to Ease Back Into Frequent Exercise

After the world was rocked by the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of Americans were forced to upend their daily routines. This included everything from the way we shop and how we socialize, to our workout methods and other activities.

The pandemic and nation-wide lockdowns threw a wrench in the works for those who were always trying their best to stay healthy. Many people who went to the gym regularly were stuck at home. Runners stayed inside, swimmers were barred from public pools, and programs like group Yoga classes in West Loop, Chicago were cancelled in the name of safety.

Now, as businesses, gyms, and other establishments begin to reopen, and restrictions are slowly lifted, many people are excited to get back to their old workout routines.

Restarting Safely

When returning to regular exercise, you can’t just pick up where you left off. The strength and endurance you are hoping to achieve will be out of reach if you injure yourself by trying to do too much, too soon.

To restart a workout regimen safely after a long rest period, you should ease into your exercises. Spend less time at the gym than you did before, reduce the amount of reps, miles, or weight you use to prevent injury.
