Stay Active Over Thanksgiving

Published by Dr. Alden Clendenin

Thanksgiving and the holidays in general are synonymous with food. For those that are looking to stay healthy during the season, it can be hard to do this when sweets and other treats are common. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to stay active over Thanksgiving, while still being with your family and friends.

Turkey Trot

Many cities have morning runs called the “Turkey Trot” on Thanksgiving. People can sign up for a 5K, 10K, or even a walking option! This means that most of the family can join in on the fun, or can at least be a part of the cheering section. The best part is that many participants dress up in costumes that are holiday-themed, from turkeys to Santa. Enjoy exercise in the beginning of the day so you can spend the rest of the day relaxing and eating!

Football

A common Thanksgiving tradition is to watch football, why not play it as well? Get together a group of at least six, whether it is family, neighbors, friends, etc., and play a game of touch football. Make sure you are careful-we don’t need any injuries on Thanksgiving! You can also make it interesting; the losing team has to dishes!

After Dinner

Anyone who has had a Thanksgiving dinner knows how filling it can be. Even if you curb the amount you eat, the food is heavy and often includes a lot of starch. Instead of succumbing to the couch, go on a walk or bike ride! It may be cold out, but layer up and get the family to go for a walk around the block. That way, you can digest before the pie is served!

Overall, the holidays are a great time to see friends and family and enjoy some delicious foods. However, it can be an indulgent time, so try to take steps to at least balance out the treats to stay healthy over the holidays.
